It is with heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of Dr. Paul Goss.
Over a remarkable life and medical career, Dr. Goss wore many hats as a globally renowned cancer specialist with nearly 40 years of clinical and research experience. He graduated MD from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, obtained a PhD in cancer research from the University of London, and practiced medicine in London, Toronto, and Boston. Through his medical career, Dr. Goss personally cared for more than 7,000 cancer patients and designed and spearheaded clinical trials involving over 25,000 cancer patients in more than 55 countries. Dr. Goss was also a global cancer control expert, having led multi-national teams of researchers to examine the state of cancer control in over half the world’s population including Latin America, China, India, and Russia. He has over 250 publications in leading international journals on cancer research and cancer control.
In 2013, Dr. Goss founded the non-profit Global Cancer Institute, Inc. (GCI). Born out of his firsthand experience witnessing the obstacles and discrimination that socially and economically marginalized patients faced in accessing healthcare under the apartheid system in South Africa, Dr. Goss saw the tremendous unmet need to overcome barriers to care for patients and provide the medical profession with the tools and information needed to deliver the best possible care. His life’s experience working with and training doctors in resource-limited health systems around the world led to GCI’s work today throughout many countries of the world.
GCI is committed to its mission of improving survival rates and the quality of life of underserved cancer patients worldwide and continues to bring Dr. Goss’s legacy to life by supporting transformative programs to overcome barriers to care for the most vulnerable patients, while providing information and education to care providers to improve patterns of clinical practice, globally.
